Service Description

This course is perfect for beginners who enjoyed the taster class and are interested in learning and developing their pottery skills, or for those who are looking for an engaging, creative activity for a couple weeks. Beginners classes are a mix of closely guided tutoring and self directed development. Students will learn about clay manipulation at several stages of the process including turning and glazing. Students will have ample time to practice throwing at the wheel and can opt for handbuilding if they so wish and discuss with the tutor. We aim to make sure students leave with more skills, confidence, and several pieces of work that are truly handmade from start to finish. What follows is a rough outline of what will be taught week to week: Week 1 - Handbuilding, wedging, an introduction to throwing Week 2- Practicing the fundamentals of throwing Week 3- Trimming work made in the first 2 classes Week 4- Throwing with larger amounts of clay, coning, wedging Week 5- Trimming, optional handbuilding Week 6-Glazing -They are no added costs- all clay, glazes, and firings are included in the course price -Please prepare for the class by cutting your nails short, wearing clothes you don't mind getting dirty (clay does come out easily in the wash), and bringing a tea towel and a plastic bag -They are no added costs- all clay, glazes, and firings are included in the course price -Please prepare for the class by cutting your nails short, wearing clothes you don't mind getting dirty (clay does come out easily in the wash), and bringing a tea towel and a plastic bag We understand that a 6 week commitment is a big ask. If you know that you will be unable to make a lesson, please get in touch with the studio manager or send us an email (nam@cernamic.com), and we will do our best to substitute you with the appropriate lesson on another course's identical class (offered once per course to each student) or in a self directed drop in. If you know you will miss a class please let us know in advance so we can figure out the best way to accommodate. Please try and make sure you are able to attend the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 6th classes as we will be teaching fundamental techniques.
